Sonia Rykiel - Paris

Born in Paris in 1930, Sonia Rykiel started designing out of necessity! She was pregnant and could not find anything that she liked, so she designed her own clothes.

Her specialty is knitwear and her trademark design are skinny sweaters with raised armholes in distinctive colors and striped pattern

Since 1964, she has been nicknamed the "Queen of Knitwear" and forty years later, she still holds that title.

In 1968 Rykiel's designs were revolutionary. Her flattering knits symbolised liberation for women's bodies from the stiff silhouette of the previous decade.

Renowned for her revolutionary, inside-out stitching technique and statement knitwear, expect cutesy detailing, nautical striped dresses and slogan sweaters.

Today, Madame Rykiel is a French institution. She has written novels, decorated hotels, sung a duet with Malcolm McLaren and even had a rose named after her.
