Paris Day Trip to Giverny and Auvers-sur-Oise
Walk in the footsteps of two of the world's most iconic painters, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh, on this day trip from Paris to the small towns of Giverny and Auvers-sur-Oise. With a guide, visit Claude Monet's House and Gardens to see where he lived and painted, including his water lily pond, and then learn about Van Gogh's inspiration and history as you see subjects from his paintings, the room where he spent the end of his life, and his grave. Hotel pickup and drop-off included.
Your tour starts with pickup at your hotel or apartment in Paris by your guide. Board a minibus outfitted with Wi-Fi and educational tablets you can use, if you wish, for the roughly 1.5-hour drive to Giverny, former home of Claude Monet.
You'll arrive at Claude Monet's House and Gardens, a Norman orchard that Monet turned into a lavish property full of colorful flowers and other vegetation, including cherry trees, tulips, roses, wisteria, weeping willows, and irises. Stroll through the garden, and check out his water lily pond and Japanese bridge, which you'll recognize from some of his most famous paintings. Inside the pink and green house, you can see the kitchen, dining room, living space, and more, and admire Monet's collection of Japanese prints, another source of inspiration. You'll also visit the large workshop.
Afterward, visit the Musée des Impressionnismes in Giverny, a museum dedicated to the history of the Impressionist art movement, before sitting down to lunch at a charming place in town (own expense).
In the afternoon, head to the town of Auvers-sur-Oise, where Vincent van Gogh spent the final days of his life. See the wheat fields and church that he painted, and visit his room at Auberge Ravoux, where he died. You'll also see the twin graves of Van Gogh and his brother. Your day trip then ends with the drive back to Paris.
