More than a one man retrospective for Edouard Manet (1832-1883), the exhibition Manet, the Man who Invented Modern Art explores and highlights the historical situation around him, including the reaffirmed legacy of Romanticism, the impact of his contemporaries and the changes in the media at the time. Manet was also Modern in the way he challenged the ancient masters from Fra Angelico to Velazquez. This exhibition takes another look at the many links that the painter resolutely created and rejected within both public and political spheres...

After the FIAC, the second art event in Paris is Art Paris.

Art Paris 2011 is stretching the limits of traditional fairs to propose a new kind of modern and contemporary art fair based on artistic projects specially designed and carried out with its participating galleries and their artists.

Marks and Spencer to open in Paris again

British high street chain store, Marks and Spencer, is to set up shop in Paris again, 10 years after it closed all its branches in France.

A new Marks and Spencer store is to open on the Champs Elysées in time for the Christmas rush at the end of this year. It will sell womenswear and food.

The company also hopes to open a number of its smaller “Simply Food” stores in and around the French capital, and is exploring other locations to sell a larger range of clothes and food....

Clocks went forward one hour across  EU this Sunday, March 27th 2011, switching from Winter Time to Summer Time or "heure d'été" in France that is:

GMT +2

 

At 2am it was 3am.

 

Spain, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden are now two hours ahead of GMT, i.e. GMT +2.

Summer Time will last until the last Sunday in October.

An immigrant’s son who loved to tangle up the French language, using slang and juggling words, he also loved to play with his personal image. Belgian gallerist Roger Szmulewicz, a true Gainsbourg fan, exhibits over forty pictures from different moments in the life of a man that made his mark in French music culture and history. But not only that. The looks, the theatricality of gestures, has constructed a model for an entire generation of rock musicians, notably in the English new wave....

Lady Gaga in Paris tonight for the Thierry Mugler show (March 2)

The takeover of Thierry Mugler's runway presentations by Lady Gaga and her stylist Nicola Formichetti has come full circle with Gaga confirming via Twitter that she will walk in the show on March 2 at 9:30pm CET.

 

The tweet reads: "I'm making my debut as a runway model, walking in the MUGLER PARIS FASHIONSHOW 3/2. I directed the show music, previewing Government Hooker," with "previewing" meaning that the singer will premiere a never-heard-before track during the show....

Fashion house Dior suspends lead designer John Galliano

French fashion house Dior said on Tuesday it is firing John Galliano after complaints were lodged with police that their star designer made offensive and anti-Semitic comments last week.
Dior said it had decided to fire him after seeing a video clip allegedly showing the designer making abusive comments in a Paris bar.

The British designer - an alleged Jew hater - then tells a horrified woman: "People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers, would all be f****** gassed."....

No new 3 star restaurant in the 2011 edition of the Michelin France Guide, One restaurant loses its third star and five -- including three in Paris -- gain a second.

A total of 601 win a Bib Gourmand for value, overtaking the 571 star holders for the first time.

Parisian luxury hotel for dogs gets tails wagging

Heated pools, massage salons and a-la-carte menus are de rigueur at luxury hotels across the world but in one exclusive Paris establishment the difference is the guests: they have four legs, and enthusiastically wagging tails.

 

 

Actuel Dogs bills itself as France's first luxury hotel for dogs, and founders Devi and Stan Burun, a dog behavior specialist and lifelong dog-lover, also offer training programs unruly hounds and dog walks in the woods....

The edition 2011 of the gastronomical Michelin Guide, which will be revealed Monday February 28th , could not count any new table “three stars”, if one believes the rumours which run in the kitchens. For two months, as for each year, some names have circulated and circulated … But several sources are guessing, these last days, that no new establishment should receive the ultimate reward this year..
